Yes, we are in a fight.
A big fight.
It is the same fight every generation in The Republic has fought since 1776. That fight is: “What does it mean to be an ‘American’?”
Yes, we’re in a fight.
Yet, let our weapons be reason. Let our swords be logic. Let our arguments be based upon facts. Let our bombs be compassion and understanding. Let our words be free from threats and violence. Let our snipers be true statesmen at the podium making impassioned speeches about honor and goodness and honesty and kindness.
We need not demonize others to be like Christ or Muhammed or Vishnu or Buddha. They would be, no doubt, ashamed of their followers.
Let us line up in formation to face those whose opinions are different and create an armistice which embraces policies benefiting all Americans. And where differences exist, let us understand and accept those differences as the minor things they are … as the way of democracies rather than fear or assault them as is the way of barbarians.
It must be this way because the path we’re now on is one of self-destruction as a Nation … as a People … as a Civilization. I know of no rational being who desires to see those outcomes.
