Steve was amazing at teaching. It's all about the Destination!Posted on Paul FergusonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently attended The Executive Academy, at the Parsons, KS Police Department, put on by The Results Group, and administered by Steve (Stephen) Kent. I was to go to this training and evaluate it against FBI LEEDA’s executive course. Instructor: Steve was highly laid back and definitely an expert in the art of leadership. In the area of leadership Steve had several quotes which are very resounding for law enforcement. Are we in love with the disease that is ailing us, and we are what we walk past are two quotes I enjoyed. Instead of fixing a problem we complain. Therefore, the negativity becomes what we walk past, and it becomes culture. People do not leave jobs for the most part, they leave bad leadership and culture. Be careful what you measure when it comes to productivity. Is it what the consumer wants. Measure what is important to the people who pay the bills and stop counting the stupid stuff. Crime prevention cannot be measured, but we can teach people to be crime resistant. Don’t measure crime stats, worry more about reported and unreported crimes. If you cannot sell the steak, sell the sizzle. When discussing what you want the department to look like to the higher ups tell them this is what our agency will look like when we have following resources because this is what I can do now with the resources I have and that may not be enough for what the customer wants. A lesson about morale was that it is usually not a problem, it is usually one or two people with an attitude problem and get rid of the toxic employee. That brings up having options. Create options for your people and create a learning department instead of a trained one. Steve also spoke about what it should look like to be a member of the team. 1. Be proud of other team members’ successes. 2. Help others in the team without being asked. 3. Give each other constructive criticism instead of telling them how to do something. 4. Be able to accept constructive criticism. 5. Respect your teammates, listening denotes respect. 6. Kill the rumor mill with facts. Help subordinates obtain their goals, from Maslow’s hierarchy of needs people need two things, physiological needs, and self-actualization. Without esteem, belonging, safety, and physiological there will be no team. One of the other topics Steve covered was budgeting. Budget for what is next not what we did the year prior. As the CEO you should be out shaking hands and kissing babies because politics are your job. It is the job of those under you to run things. Don’t define yourself by the urgent tasks you perform or how busy you are. It is a recipe for burn out. If you make everything an urgent task you are just tired at the end of the day and you start over again the next day. If you have urgent work, there are three things you can do. Do it, delegate it, or dump it. There is no such thing as time management, there is only choice management. Choice management is doing the things that matter. If you delegate something to another person on a routine basis ensure you give them an opportunity to give something else up, and never take something away from another person unless you give them something to replace it. In conclusion, this was a very good class, and I feel it is better than the FBI LEEDA course because it covered more relevant topics for an executive level of leadership. Things to remember. When faced with a lack of information people fill in the blanks. People call us because they trust us, even if it is a service we do not provide, so if it is stupid we still owe it to them to listen. Consistency, predictability, and unconditional love make a great supervisor. Don’t let a project kill a good idea, and force decision making as deep in your organization as possible.Posted on Jim FerbertTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
