The Sergeants’ Academy Online is a series of LIVE, ON-LINE classes conducted with students from across the United States.

This academy is presented in eight, separate blocks: six 5-hour blocks, two 4-hour blocks and one, 2-hour block.
The live sessions use Zoom (it is free) (get a Zoom account here) as the delivery platform and The Results Group, Ltd.’s Distance Learning capability. It is not necessary for participants to download our distance learning software; it is the method we will use for students to take Quizzes, and download their Certificates of Completion.

Dates: The training sessions are conducted as noted below. When you register, please note the dates on your own calendar and be prepared to promptly join the class at least 5 minutes before it begins on-line. If the dates don't work out for you, please check other, similar academies in the list at right for one that has a suitable schedule. We are also amenable to tailor a schedule for a minimum of 15 participants.
Times: Each successive block begins PROMPTLY at 08:30 hours. Whether at work or at home, it is perfectly acceptable to take a break at your computer workstation, eat snacks, or get up to go to the restroom during the sessions.
Interactive: One of the things I have been instructed about is the fact that some students (yes, even LEOs) will log in to an online course, go watch television or walk their dog, then come back and claim credit. In order to maintain the official blessings of various State P.O.S.T. agencies, I have guaranteed them that we will ensure that all students must interact with the instructor on a regular, unannounced basis during each block of training. I hate to have to do that, but I do not get to set those rules … it could be some of your friends and mine have been the ones who screwed it up for everyone … and they would probably be among the first to claim “integrity.” There are numerous “Break Out Rooms” in the course (the equivalent of the work table configuration we use in regular classroom training), where participants can work together on in-class assignments. Participants MUST have a Zoom account in order to participate in the Break Out Rooms.
Roster: Again, in order to maintain the blessings of various P.O.S.T. agencies, we will maintain a roster for each training session. If, for some reason, a student cannot participate in one of the sessions, please contact me personally and we may work out some other arrangements. However, in order to get a Certificate of Completion for the full, 40 hours’ credit, each student must have paid tuition, attend all the classes, and complete all quizzes.
Homework Assignments: There is no homework.
Course Credit: 40 hours
This course is intended for candidates for promotion and those who already hold the rank of Sergeant or Supervisor. Agencies may choose to also include certain personnel who are not yet official candidates for promotion, but clearly demonstrate potential for promotion at some point in their future career. Participation is NOT LIMITED to commissioned personnel; they may be from Patrol, Corrections/Jail, Records, Dispatch/911 or any other section within your agency. Civilian personnel are also welcome in this (or any other) Academy.

Sessions 1 and 2 (Five hours each, February 12 and February 19) – The Sergeant’s Role As Follower And Leader Among The Topics To Be Covered During These Two, Five-Hour Sessions: Why It’s Critical That You Be A Good Follower Before Expecting Others To Follow You; “I Am Not My Job Title” And Other Perils Of Being A Supervisor; Interpersonal Dynamics; Effective Leaders versus Ineffective Leaders; What It Takes To Move From Officer/Deputy To The Role Of Sergeant; Leadership; Strategic Issues Facing Law Enforcement Supervisors; How To Delegate Effectively; How To Deal With Difficult Employees; Effective Communication; Interrelationships Between Shift, Section, and Department Plans and Budgets; How To Write Effective Policies and Procedures; Common Problems Among Supervisors And How To Overcome Them.
Sessions 3 and 4 (Five hours each, February 26 and March 5) – The Sergeant’s Role In Day-To-Day Operations Among The Topics To Be Covered During These Two, Five-Hour Sessions: The Importance Of Taking Initiative; How To Earn Respect From Peers, Subordinates and The Chief/Sheriff/ Colonel; How To Structure Effective Line And Staff Relationships; Critical Components Of The Supervisor’s Job Description; More On Communication; Collaboration With Other Departments Within Your Agency; How To Use Action Plans And Achievement Reports; Time Management; and Techniques For Improving Quality, Productivity and Creativity Within Your Team; The Importance Of A “Give Up List”; Improving Listening Skills
Session 5 (Two Hours, March 12) – The Sergeant’s Role In Finance & Budgeting Among The Topics To Be Covered During This Two-Hour Session: How To Prepare A Budget; How To Understand And Use Your Budget As A Tool; What Assistance We Must Expect From The (City/County) Finance Departments; How To Be Accountable For Your Budget; The Sergeant’s Role In Acquiring Resources For The Team. (This is NOT a bookkeeping or accounting class.)
Sessions 6 and 7 – (Five Hours Each, March 19 and March 26) – The Sergeant’s Role In People Management Among The Topics To Be Covered During These Two, Five-Hour Sessions: Principles Of Organizational Development; How To Create An Effective Chart of Organization; Techniques For Effective Recruiting and Selection; How And Why To Implement An Effective Orientation Program; Setting Performance Standards For Subordinates; How To Be An Effective Coach; How To Conduct An Effective Job Performance Review; Records Keeping In People Management; How To Terminate Employment Relationships Without Guilt; What We Should Expect From The City/County Personnel Office.
Sessions 8 and 9 (Four Hours Each , April 2 and April 9) – The Sergeant’s Role In Community and Media Relations Among The Topics To Be Covered During These Two, Four-Hour Sessions: Marketing & Community Relations Defined; How To Deal With The Media; How To Write An Effective Community Relations Plan; Using Social Media To Promote The Value Of Your Agency; The Role Of Citizen’s Academies In Furthering The Agency’s Objectives; The Role And Responsibilities Of The Public Information Officer (PIO); Bad Press: How To Deal With It/How To Avoid It; Effectively Packaging Your Agency; How And Why To Create A Citizen’s Advisory Group.
