So, you’ve reached the senior leadership level of your organization. Congratulations!
It could be that you’ve inherited decades of symptoms from your well-meaning, but poorly-skilled predecessors. Among those symptoms are: inadequate funding; fluctuating employee morale; lack of accountability; whiners; personnel who are retired at work; a city council, board of county commissioners, business partner who don’t understand; infighting among and between shifts, departments, and echelons; people who cause problems and people who simply want to complain about problems; not enough people to get the job done; and the ever-present double-bind of being held accountable for outcomes when you don’t necessarily control the resources it takes to produce those outcomes…
So, what do you do? Perpetuate the complaining? Portray yourself or your organization as a victim of circumstances? Blame it on someone else?
No, that’s what ineffective people do. Fortunately, there is a viable alternative.
All our academies are designed for people who want to build upon their leadership skills to successfully inspire others to take positive, decisive courses of action. Sheriffs, Police Chiefs, Undersheriffs, Assistant Police Chiefs, Chief Deputies, Precinct & Bureau Commanders, Captains & Lieutenants and Sergeants throughout the United States have participated in our leadership training consistently report that the experience “exceeded my expectations.” Participants from local businesses, civic organizations, and government organizations in State, County and Municipalities are also encouraged to attend.
The Executive Academy consists of 5 consecutive days of work sessions (40 hours). These work sessions are a combination of facilitated instruction, case examples and relies upon active participation by all attendees.
The work sessions are:
Session 1 The Executive As Visionary & Strategic Planner: Among the topics to be covered: Creating Strategic Advantage for your organization; Strategic Issues facing organizations over the next 10 years and how to plan and manage around them; how to make planning an integral part of the culture of your organization; the importance of an effective Strategic Plan; avoiding triangulation; the individual’s obligation to have a positive impact on the fabric of your organization’s culture; in order to improve productivity and quality we must understand what they mean and how to measure them; creating a learning organization versus a trained organization; obstacles to getting what you want and how to overcome them.
Session 2 The Executive’s Role In Implementing Effective Leadership Practices: Among the topics to be covered: “Needs – Results – Work”; Definition of “plans,” “policies,” and “procedures”; How to create an environment that fosters effective decision making and acceptance of accountability at all echelons; eliminating the “Silo Effect”; focusing on meaningful achievements rather than upon the “gerbil-wheel of tasks”; the personal and organizational importance of being productive rather than simply being “busy”; the myth of “time management”; positioning yourself for promotion or other careers; how to improve communication among and between individuals, echelons and functional areas.
Session 3 The Executive As Inspirational Team Member: Among the topics to be covered: Who is the “team” for this organization? What does it take to create and maintain an effective team, focused on our mission and objectives? What factors become obstacles to effective teams? “Customers” and “Suppliers”; Action plan development for The Six Subordinate-Centered Obligations Of Leaders; Position-Specific Decision-Making Authorities; Effective use of the “chain-of-command” (which we prefer to call the “chain-of-communication”); Succession planning; What is the role of each member of our team in leading by example and expecting others to follow accordingly? The Team Rules; effective Performance Evaluations.
Session 4 The Executive’s Role In Budgeting: Among the topics to be covered: Relevance of proposals and Action Plans; Using Vertical Staffing Task Forces to get things done; Tying our budget to the Strategic Plan and our Mission; How to always be prepared for budget presentations – even at the line level; integrating the organization’s goals with the budget process; how to sell your budget; promoting successes; how and why to involve decision makers throughout your organization in finance and budgeting.
Session 5 The Executive’s Role In Effectively Marketing The Organization: Among the topics to be covered: Why all organizations and individuals need an effective marketing program; fundamentals of marketing, opinion research, community relations, publicity and media relations; how to get the word out about your organization without relying solely on local media; critical elements in developing an effective marketing program; the role of an effective Public Information Officer or “spokesperson”; what do we want people to know about us, feel about us and do about us?
And, “where to from here?” – an Action Plan for implementation after the academy is completed.
- Class begins promptly at 0800 hours. We take breaks each hour. Lunch is between 1200 and 1300 hours. Each training day ends not later than 1700 hours.
- We do not provide meals.
- Unless your agency has a policy requiring otherwise, we encourage casual dress … The instructor wears jeans …
- Participants are encouraged to bring pen/pencil and paper for notes.
- We ask that “texting,” “internet surfing” and phone calls be avoided during instruction times.
- Each participant will have access to digital copies of course materials and a Certificate of Completion within a week after the course has been completed.
